TRAINING IN JAPAN
From 27 August to 1 September 2025, the Director of SE “National Institute for Development Infrastructure” Artem Bezuglyi and the Head of the Center for Research on Infrastructure Development and Maintenance Serhii Illiash, as part of the delegation of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, participated in a training program in Japan (Matsuyama).
During the training, participants familiarized themselves with Japanese approaches to emergency road repair, in particular the use of recycled materials. The training was organized by the Japanese road construction company IKEE LTD within the framework of the program “Promotion of emergency road repair business using all-weather materials for pavement repair with the use of crushed stone in Ukraine,” funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
During the visit, participants also studied the production and application processes of the cold asphalt mixture Excel Patch for emergency pothole repair.
According to Japanese experts, this mixture can be used in rainy weather and at different temperatures (from +40 to -20°C), can be stored for a long time at room (average) temperature, and its compaction does not require heavy specialized equipment (rollers). It can be compacted using light vibrating plates or even by vehicle wheels or manual tampers.
During the visit, participants also became familiar with various technologies for road repair and maintenance, as well as approaches to organizing road construction works used in Japan. Particular interest was drawn to a project involving the reuse of plastic bottle caps in the production of asphalt mixtures.
Throughout the working visit, significant experience was gained regarding the use of waste materials in road construction, and a roadmap for further cooperation with Japanese colleagues was developed. A scientific and practical seminar for Ukrainian specialists and an experimental site for emergency repairs are planned for the future.
We express our sincere gratitude to the Japanese people for their substantial support and assistance during this difficult time.
