TRAINING IN JAPAN
From August 27 to September 1, Artem Bezuglyi, Director of the State Enterprise "National Institute for Development Infrastructure" and Serhii Illiash, Head of the Center for Research on Infrastructure Development and Maintenance, participated in a training program in Japan (Matsuyama), during which they learned about Japanese approaches to emergency road repairs, in particular the use of secondary raw materials. The training was organized by the Japanese road construction company IKEE LTD as part of the program "Promoting the business of emergency road repair using all-weather materials for road surface repair using crushed stone in Ukraine," funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
During the visit, they familiarized themselves with the processes of manufacturing and installing Excel Patch cold asphalt concrete mix for emergency pothole repair.
According to Japanese experts, this mixture can be used in rainy weather, at different temperatures (from +40 to -20°C), it can be stored for a long time at average (room) temperature, and compacting such a mixture does not require special heavy equipment (rollers), but can be done using light vibrating plates or even compacted with a car wheel or manually with tampers.
During the visit, we also learned about various technologies for repairing and maintaining motorways, as well as approaches to organizing road construction work used in Japan. Of particular interest was a project to reuse plastic bottle caps in the manufacture of asphalt concrete mixtures.
During the working visit, we gained tremendous experience in the use of waste in road construction and developed a roadmap for further cooperation with our Japanese colleagues. Ahead of us is a scientific and practical seminar for Ukrainian colleagues and an experimental site for emergency repairs.
We express our sincere gratitude to the Japanese people for their substantial support and assistance during this difficult time.
