SEMINAR ON THE USE OF WASTE MATERIALS

On October 31, the team of the State Enterprise “DerzhdorNDI”, together with the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, held the international scientific and practical online seminar “The Use of Waste and Industrial By-products in Road Construction”.

Among the 300 participants were leading international experts from the European Association for the Use of Coal Combustion Products (ECOBA), research institutes and universities from Poland, Hungary, Germany, and other European countries, as well as clients (regional restoration services, regional state administrations, and local authorities), contractors, designers, research institutions, material manufacturers and suppliers, and representatives of industry and public associations.

Ukraine’s road sector already has successful examples of reusing materials in pavement layers and road construction, including:

– reclaimed asphalt pavement and crushed concrete;
– the use of metallurgical slags and fly ash;
– the use of iron quartzite beneficiation waste, among others.

Under the current conditions of martial law, the issue of using construction debris and waste from destroyed structures has become particularly urgent. Today, we have a considerable number of regulatory and technical documents, as well as research results, that enable the use of circular economy principles. In the challenging conditions of wartime, we must use all available methods and approaches to restore transport infrastructure.

The team of our Institute is always ready to support the implementation of various experimental materials and technologies as part of scientific and technical support activities.

Based on the experts’ presentations, it can be concluded that the established paradigm in the industry needs to change, and waste and industrial by-products should be viewed as a potential resource rather than a disposal problem.
