Prospects for the implementation of the SUPERPAVE system in Ukrain
On 13 August 2020, a round table “Prospects for the implementation of the SUPERPAVE system in Ukraine” was held via Zoom.
More than 50 technical specialists took part in the event, representing public authorities, regional road services, regional state administrations, design and research organizations, contracting companies, and private enterprises.
Participants also gained valuable European experience presented by Otakar Vasina, Doctor of Science and Professor at the Faculty of Transportation Sciences of the Czech Technical University.
During the round table, the main approaches to performance-based bitumen grading (PG grading) were discussed, including selection of bitumen depending on climatic conditions and traffic loads, requirements for materials used in asphalt mixtures, principles of asphalt mix design, and production quality control.
As a result of the round table, it was concluded that the SUPERPAVE approach to asphalt mix design is highly promising for Ukraine. Therefore, to improve mix design methods, it is necessary to move towards harmonization with relevant European standards and strengthen the procurement of required laboratory and testing equipment.
