ONLINE PRESENTATION OF SUPERPAVE
On July 11, the team of the State Enterprise “DerzhdorNDI”, together with American, European, and Ukrainian colleagues, held an online presentation of the modern American SUPERPAVE system for asphalt concrete mix design.
More than 100 participants from the United States, Italy, Poland, and Ukraine took part in the event, including clients, contractors, designers, suppliers of modern equipment, bitumen producers, and other institutions that were actively involved in the session.
It should be noted that the SUPERPAVE system:
– was developed in the United States in the 1990s;
– defines requirements for selecting bitumen, aggregates, and other components of asphalt concrete mixtures, as well as their proportions depending on climate conditions, traffic loads, and the depth of the asphalt layer within the pavement structure;
– establishes requirements for further evaluation of the moisture resistance, rutting resistance, and crack resistance of the designed asphalt concrete;
– has proven high efficiency, confirmed by 30 years of practical use;
– helps reduce rutting and cracking and extends the service life of asphalt layers;
– is used in many countries worldwide, including the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and is also gaining popularity in several other developed countries, including European Union member states.
Specialists of the State Enterprise “DerzhdorNDI” have already completed a significant part of the work on the potential implementation of the SUPERPAVE system in Ukraine:
– analyzed climatic conditions affecting asphalt concrete performance based on data from 150 meteorological stations for the period 2005–2022;
– determined the required bitumen performance characteristics according to the SUPERPAVE system depending on reliability level, traffic load, and asphalt layer depth, which will ensure rutting and crack resistance;
– conducted studies of fine-grained and coarse-grained asphalt mixtures and established recommended compaction parameters;
– carried out work on adapting the gyratory compaction method for laboratory conditions and researched the design of stone mastic asphalt mixtures.
In the future, we plan to implement the obtained results in road rehabilitation projects.
It is essential to create all necessary conditions for the implementation of modern American practices, in particular the SUPERPAVE system. However, it is also necessary to address the issue of funding sources for purchasing SUPERPAVE equipment for all key market participants.
