MEMORANDUM

Today, a Memorandum on Promotion for use of metallurgical slag in road construction was signed between the “DerzhdorNDI” SE , "UKRMETALURGPROM" Association of Enterprises  and the National Association of Road Workers of Ukraine.

The purpose of the Memorandum is to consolidate the efforts of industrial enterprises, road contractors and scientific potential on the practical use of metallurgical waste in road construction.

Artem Bezuglyi, Director of “DerzhdorNDI” SE:

According to the results of “DerzhdorNDI”SE scientific researches and taking into account the requirements of construction norms and regulations, metallurgical slag can be used in following areas:

  • in the construction of subgrade embankments,
  • as crushed stone materials in the layers of road pavement foundation,
  • aggregates in crushed stone sand and cement concrete mixes.

This year, according to the approved design documentation, it is planned to use 482 thousand cubic meters of slag, in particular, the largest volumes of use are planned at the following facilities of “Big Construction” Program:

H-31 Dnipro - Tsarychanka - Kobeliaky - Reshetylivka;

H-30 Vasylivka - Berdiansk;

H-11 Dnipro - Kryvyi Rih - Mykolaiv;

H-23 Kropyvnytskyi - Kryvyi Rih - Mykolaiv;

H-26 Chuguiv - Milove, etc.

I am convinced that the use of slag in road construction will help to save financial resources and solve environmental problems.

Oleksandr Kalenkov, President of “UKRMETALURGPROM”:

As a representative of 1/3 of the entire metallurgical industry, I have objective information regarding the availability of 160 million tons of waste products of metallurgical production.

Using of these materials in the recovery of roads will allow achieving significant savings of material and technical resources in compliance with the needed technical indicators of road pavement construction.

Additionally, I emphasize that wastes are actively used by the most technologically advanced countries, while ensuring the recycling of the economy. Ukraine has to develop in this direction and this Memorandum is a symbol of the beginning of active work on the introduction of slag in road construction.

Mykola Berezovskyi, President of the National Association of Road Workers of Ukraine:

We have experience in the use of slag in the construction of the highway M-05 Kyiv - Odesa, where every second ton of crushed stone material layers of the pavement foundation was made of slag.

I see the main reason for the decline in demand for slag crushed stone in the fact that the road industry has suffered from significant underfunding in the last decade. It is also needed to take into account the responsibility of the customer who must understand the feasibility of using the slag in individual projects.

Today, we have strong political support, the consolidation of facilities and the attraction of record-breaking funding for the road sector - and therefore we must do our utmost to use all possible resources for the successful implementation of “Big Construction” National Program.

In general, each party to the Memorandum is inclined to believe that for successful implementation of such a scale program of Ukrainian roads recovery, all conditions must be provided for the growth of the prestige of the road worker profession, as it should be in a highly developed country.
