DBN on the Design of Bridges and Culverts
The team of the State Enterprise “National Institute for Development Infrastructure” continues to actively work on improving Ukraine’s regulatory framework in the field of bridge engineering.
On January 1, 2026, DBN V.2.3-22:2025 “Bridges and Culverts. Basic Design Requirements”, developed by the team of the State Enterprise “NIDI” and approved by the order of the Ministry of Development No. 1261 dated 14.08.2025, will come into force.
The new DBN replaces DBN V.2.3-22:2009 and establishes modern requirements for the design of new construction, reconstruction, and capital repair of bridges and culverts, as well as covering pedestrian and bicycle crossings, underground biopassages, and movable bridges (except for mechanisms of movable spans).
Key innovations of DBN V.2.3-22:2025:
– clarification of basic requirements for bridge structures and the service life of their elements;
– definition of the reliability approach and specification of reliability coefficient values for bridge responsibility depending on the consequence class;
– establishment of design service life for critical bridge and culvert elements;
– consideration of European standards;
– regulation of accessibility (barrier-free design) requirements;
– separate inclusion of pedestrian and bicycle facilities and underground biopassages within the scope of the standards.
