Bitumen and bituminous binders
The Department of Bituminous Binder and Asphalt Department is engaged in scientific research aimed at improving the properties and increasing the durability of bitumen and materials on its basis, development and implementation of new materials and technologies based on bitumen which provide an increase of the service life of road pavement, facilitate resource and energy saving, improve environmental safety and extend the construction season in the road sector.
Significant results have been achieved in this direction; in particular, up-to-date technologies have been developed and implemented:
- production and placement of asphalt mixes at reduced technological temperatures using special energy-saving additives;
- comprehensive improvement of the bitumen and asphalt properties using various types of additives;
- production of cold mixtures for the year-round elimination of potholes of road pavement;
- arrangement of wearing course and repair of pavement using bitumen emulsions, etc.
The Bituminous Binder and Asphalt Department carries out works on the assessment of the conformity of oil viscous paving bitumen, modified bitumen, paving bitumen emulsions, materials for sealing seams and cracks in road and airfield pavement, additives for improving the properties of bitumen and asphalt, as well as cellulosic additives for stone mastic asphalt. Also, the Department can test aggregates (fillers) for road construction in compliance with the requirements of the European Union Directive 305/2011 according to which the construction products will be subject to mandatory conformity assessment.
