“Modern methods of road design are the key to their quality and durability”

On 8–10 February 2022, a scientific and practical seminar “Modern methods of road design are the key to their quality and durability” was held in Lutsk.

On 8 February, the scientific and practical seminar “Modern methods of road design are the key to their quality and durability”, organized by Ukravtodor and SE “DerzhdorNDI”, started its work. The event was attended both in person and online by more than 300 specialists from all over Ukraine.

The main topics included:

  • presentation of updated state building codes for the design of public roads and streets and roads in settlements (DBN-4 and DBN-5);
  • prohibition of indirect left turns at traffic volumes exceeding 20,000 vehicles per day;
  • stationary electric lighting on Category I M-roads with traffic volumes exceeding 30,000 vehicles per day;
  • overpasses for pedestrians across Category I–II roads;
  • removal of dependence of pavement service life on traffic intensity;
  • updated requirements for minimum thickness of flexible pavement layers;
  • requirements for planning and design of cycling infrastructure, as well as ensuring accessibility for people with reduced mobility;
  • updated national standards and approaches to road safety (safety audit);
  • innovations in determining the cost of road and design works;
  • specifics of scientific and technical support of road works;
  • issues of pavement structural reliability calculation;
  • modern software systems for road design;
  • problematic issues in design, etc.

Thanks to the presentations of our speakers, practical solutions were developed to improve the quality of design decisions, in particular:

  1. a systematic approach to improving the qualification of industry specialists;
  2. development of modern information tools for automated design and improvement of information support for designers through modern communication channels (seminars, Facebook, Instagram, website, Telegram channel, Road Innovation Portal, Road Innovation Platform, and other information channels);
  3. active involvement of all industry stakeholders in updating the regulatory framework;
  4. introduction of new materials and technologies through scientific and technical support of road projects;
  5. establishment of specialized seminars for professionals via Zoom.
